Journal Entry
"Do you feel the earth move under your feet, cap? That'll be the Skarn. They love nothing more than to burrow into an island and feed on aether, but get this--they look just like aether vents when they feed, so don't be fooled. "
The body of the Skarn is relatively lean and lizard-like, with anatomy similar to a terrestrial turtle. But these Behemoths don't grow a bony shell. Instead they use the living terra aether within their archonite cores to form protective armour plating out of earth and stone. The result is a heavy, stout, slow-moving creature that can easily resist damage from a Slayer's weapons unless a gap in their armour can be found or the individual rocks and boulders the Skarn wears like a shield are broken.
A Skarn doesn't rely on its instinctive connection to terra for defense alone. The same instincts that drive this Behemoth to pull stone and rock to itself for protection also allow it to use those same materials as weapons. It can pull its armour in around its body to form a stone cocoon, and then blast that cocoon out as a wave of rock. The Skarn will hunker down in and launch individual pieces of boulder at a specific foe, crushing them beneath an arc of tumbling roc.
Most terrifying of all, they are able to use terra to pull all the stones in the area into a punishing cyclone of wind, debris, and solid rock. This brutal attack also drags any nearby Slayers inexorably into a twisting vortex of aether and stone, knocking even the most prepared and protected Behemothhunters onto their backs.
Skarns can be found throughout the Shattered Isles, but despite their great bulk they are actually quite good at camouflage thanks to the natural environmental armour around their scaly bodies. When a Skarn wants to settle in and feed on an aether vent, it will burrow down into the earth next to that aether source and begin its feast. Other Behemoths are known to burrow-feed in this way, but only the Skarn can disguise its exposed back as a second aether vent. Savvy Slayers always check for a second vent.
Kat's Hunting Tips:
-The Skarn’s armour is vulnerable to blunt damage of the sort dealt by hammers and aether strikers.
-A Skarn’s aether vortex is tough to crack, but it can be interrupted with a well-timed staggering attack.
-When a Skarn targets you with a belly-slam, heavy damage to its legs can stop the attack cold.
Skarn
A reptilian Behemoth that can manipulate terra aether to armour its own body with stone. More than mere protection, the Skarn can use these hunks of rock to batter foes to death.

Summary
The aptly named Rockfall Skarn has even greater control over terra aether than its younger counterparts. If it isn't pulling rocks and earth into a swirling cyclone of bludgeoning death that can crush even the most cautious Slayers, the Rockfall is wrenching columns of jagged stone from the ground below that will knock them off their feet.

Lore
Beyond The Line
The airship broke through the cloud cover into the upper elevations of the Helic Risers. Ahead, a large island the colour of rust and blood crossed in front of the sun, cast in silhouette. Its rocky spires and angular cliffs sparkled with crystalline deposits, and the low-lying shaded areas showed scrubby plant growth fighting for nutrients on the arid landmass.
The airship dropped my team of Stormchasers on the edge of the unknown island and then settled into a stable current that would allow them to take long-range observation.
“Hey Zandari, don’t forget our bet,” Dray said far too loudly as we gathered our gear after landfall, “if there’s a Behemoth on this island you’re--”
At that moment a rocky outcrop near Dray exploded to life. Rising onto four craggy legs the size of tree trunks, the creature roared with a sound like a crumbling mountain and then crushed Dray flat as a ramcake.
As we bolted for cover, I managed to activate my lantern’s radio crystal to call the airship. “This island is occupied! We need immediate rescue, now!”
I heard nothing in return.
Earthmover
We later learned that the Krolachi called the thing a “Skarn” after a type of rockfall common on their islands. It was an apt name. Ever been pursued by a living avalanche? Seek out a Skarn and you will soon enough.
The Behemoth lumbered after us, using raw aether to hurl a storm of heavy rocks at us with tremendous force. A tree to my left exploded, knocking Fairchild to the ground. I managed to snag him by the collar and haul him back to his feet, and he leaned on me as we staggered towards a thin rock bridge that looked too light for our pursuer to cross.
Storm of Stone
But that escape route disappeared when the Skarn somehow pulled it apart with a surge of aetheric power, creating a storm of floating boulders that penned us in. And still the Behemoth closed in, its heavy footsteps making the ground shake so much I imagined the rest of the island simply crumbling out of the sky.
“Next time,” Zandari gasped in panic as she tried to put on a brave face, “I won’t make any bets about whether we find a Behemoth. If there is a next time.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but lost my words as I saw a shadow pass across the sun. I then realized why I hadn’t heard from our pilot. An airship - not our own elegant scout vessel but a small, sturdy model built to withstand storms and the occasional aether blast.
I turned back to the team. “Oh, there will be a next time,” I said as the quartet of heavily armed and armoured heroes dropped from the newly arrived vessel, their weapons ready.
“Stand back, friends,” their leader announced. “The Slayers are here.”
Notes
Interrupting
The Skarn has two windows during which it can be interrupted.
The first is when it stands up on its hind legs, exposing its belly. Hitting it hard enough will result in it falling over, cancelling the attack and briefly stunning it. Beware as any Slayers standing behind the Skarn will take damage from the Behemoth falling over.
The second is during its spin attack. Due to the nature of this attack it is recommended to use ranged means of disruption such as a War Pike or Sword, as missing a Hammer or Axe attack could end in the Slayer receiving massive amounts of damage. If interrupted, the spin attack will abruptly end and the Skarn will be briefly staggered.
